What Happens During And After A Kidney Transplant Surgery

The main function of kidneys is to filter the waste products from the body and convert them to urine. Kidney transplant is necessary when there is a case of kidney failure. The failed or diseased kidney is then replaced with a healthy one. However, a suitable donor needs to be found for the transplant. When a suitable donor is available, the transplant center will notify you and an appointment is fixed.
There will be some general instructions to be followed before you go to the hospital. One very basic requirement is to not eat or drink anything for the number of hours specified. Make sure that you take all your prescribed medicines. Also, make sure that you take all your previous test results and hospital papers. At the transplant center, you will undergo some basic tests. Even if they were previously performed, make sure that you undergo these tests as they will confirm whether new conditions have not developed since the last tests.
Once the kidney is found to be a match for you, the surgery must be performed as soon as possible. Kidney transplant is performed under general anesthetic.
The operation
The operation has three main stages. Firstly, a small incision is made in the lower abdomen. The donated kidney is then put into place through this incision. The original kidneys are left where they were. These kidneys are generally harmless. Unless they are causing any kind of pain or spreading any kind of infection, they are left where they are. Secondly, the blood vessels are attached to the blood vessels of the new kidney. This ensures that the new kidney gets the blood supply it requires to function properly. In the last stage, the ureter is attached to new kidney. This is the long tube that carries urine to the bladder.
Initially a small tube made of plastic may be inserted into the ureter to ensure the flow of urine. It is later on removed. This is generally after six to twelve weeks.
Once it is confirmed that the new kidney is properly placed and functioning, the incision is closed. The surgery is a complex process and generally takes over three hours.
After transplant
After the effects of the anesthetic have recovered it is most likely that you will feel some amount of pain. Doctors will provide you with painkillers initially. After the surgery, there will be a new set of medication that helps you immune system to get used to the new kidney and not reject it as an external body.
Most transplanted kidneys begin operating immediately. Your hospital stay will be for about one week. But there are many tests and regular checkups after the surgery that you should not miss.
Initially there will be around two appointments in a week and later on the frequency will reduce as per the results of the tests. If there are no serious symptoms observed, the transplant is considered successful and you can return to normal work within a few months!

Healthy Habits That Make You Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise

There's plenty of material out there, exhorting the value of a healthy lifestyle, to maintain good health. However despite all this, people fail to follow through on their resolutions. Why is it so? You do not need any of the fad diets to maintain an optimum level of health. Basically it comes down to this:
Eat less, eat right, exercise more, reduce stress, maintain a positive mental attitude, cut down on alcohol, and get rid of the smoking habit, that's it!
Human beings are creatures of habit, and as the saying goes, we make our habits, and our habits make us.
If you keep doing something daily, and deliberately, on a consistent basis for 6 weeks or more, and you make it fun, it becomes a habit.
So what are the habits that help you reach your objective?
1. Diet:- Cut down/eliminate junk food (fries, burgers)/sugary drinks, which if consumed on a consistent basis could lead to obesity, heart and blood vessel problems, to name a few.
2. Eat a bowl of freshly cut vegetables daily (carrots, beets, tomatoes, and cucumbers)- the more colorful the vegetables, the better. They contain high levels of antioxidants which are healthy.
Cut the vegetables, and place them in a bowl in the refrigerator, so you are ready to eat them the next day; that way you do not put it off. Your body needs carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals in the required amounts, and many of the fad diets cut down on one of these components. The deprivation of the nutrients mentioned above, leads to health problems, and lethargy. Try to avoid fad diets.
3. Eat less:- Try to eat lesser portions of food-eat at least one stage less before you feel full.
Do not binge eat. People have a tendency to eat more, if they eat while sitting in front of the television. Add nuts(careful please, if you are allergic to them) whole grains, and oily fish (containing omega 3 fatty acids ) like salmon, tuna, sardines, and mackerel.
4. Exercise more:- Again, so much advice is given in this area. To keep it simple, walk 30 minutes a day 5 times a week. Park your car a block away, and walk to your destination. Some expert swear by 20 minutes (twenty is definitely plenty).
If you like yoga, go ahead. Choose the exercise you like. If it's not fun, you may not stick with it. The message here is: 30, 20 or 10 minutes, the benefits of exercise accrue only when done on a regular basis.
However do not beat yourself up, if you miss a day here or there. Something is better than nothing.
Like the great Chinese Philosopher Confucius said "It does not matter how slow you go as long as you do not stop."
5. Reduce stress: This is extremely important. Stress increases your cortisol hormone levels which in turn increases your blood sugar, blood pressure, and causes weight gain. In the long run, it causes a myriad variety of health problems.
One of the worst causes of stress is resentment. Do not hold a grudge, forgive and let it go; you will live longer, and be more peaceful.
The Mayo Clinic guidelines for reducing stress are:
1. Stay away from the source of provocation.
2. If you cannot do so, change your reaction to it.
3. If you cannot do the above, accept it.
4. If you cannot do that, reduce it. How? By techniques like yoga, meditation, and exercise.
Smoking: Irrefutable proof has emerged linking smoking to cardiovascular disease, cancers, besides a host of other problems. You would add years to your life, if you gave up smoking.
Alcohol: Again it's a good idea to cut down on alcohol. Alcohol has nothing but empty calories, and can be toxic to the liver in the long run, besides increasing your weight.
Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
I suppose if a few of the above become habits, your health would improve in ways you cannot imagine; you would feel better.
Your body is the temple /abode in which you reside. Take good care of it, and it will take good care of you.
Wish you all the best in this journey-Make it fun, and you will stick with it.

Why Individuals Prefer Visiting Surgery Clinics

Visiting health experts is important to help individuals maintain their health. However, there are cases when visiting experts in hospitals is quite impossible due to the increasing number of patients who are also seeking for medical help, most especially medical surgeries. Because of this, more and more individuals are now going to surgery clinics.
Surgery clinics are quite similar to hospitals. However, they are smaller. Apart from that, the medical rates are higher than the hospitals. Even so, individuals still visit surgery clinics since they can provide wonderful benefits that can match their needs. Below are some of the benefits.
More personalized service
First and foremost, clinics can provide you with more a personalized service. This is possible since health experts can focus on the treatments needed to help you. Aside from that, health experts in clinics have more time in finding the right treatment you need. As a result, they can create a personalized service to ensure that your medical needs are addressed properly.
Faster recovery
Another benefit of opting for surgery clinics is you can recover faster. Of course, surgical procedures in clinics and hospitals are the same. However, clinics can help patients recover faster since they can offer better medical attention. Not to mention, recovery rooms and lounges in clinics may also have a more cheerful appearance about them in contrast to most hospital settings.
More reliable surgeons
One of the best benefits of opting for hospitals is you can find the ideal health expert who can help you with your needs. On the other hand, surgery clinics focus on a certain treatment only. Because of this, you can find more reliable surgeons in clinics since these experts continue to improve their knowledge by attending seminars related to their medical field of expertise. Surgeons in clinics also have better time in determining your needs.
Equipped with some of the best medical equipment
Lastly, some surgery clinics are equipped with some of the best medical equipment. One of the drawbacks of hospitals is they need to invest in numerous equipment and apparatus to deal with a wide range of medical conditions. On the contrary, surgery clinics can invest in the equipment that can help them treat certain conditions. For instance, when looking for skin care treatments, some clinics provide laser skin treatments, which can provide patients with better and more reliable results.
With all these, individuals can deal with their medical issues to help them improve their lifestyle, performance and aesthetics. Click here for more.

Why It's Crucial To Know Family Health History

The moment one walks into a family practice to set up their health care, they are handed a stack of papers to fill out. Among them is the family history worksheet. Anyone that hasn't done one of these will be extra thrilled to get it, actually they should be!
While it takes some time, a family health worksheet issued by a family practice can make a huge difference in the level of care that individual receives. Learn more about why this step in the endless pile of paperwork is so very important to keeping oneself healthy and happy.
What is a Family Medical History?
The family medical history paperwork is basically a record of health information concerning the new patient or a family member who is entering a new family practice. It is a complete record from three generations to include parents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandparents, cousins, brothers and sisters as well as children.
The reason it is so important is because families have many health issues in common. Their environment, genes, and lifestyle are typically much alike. Relaying any conditions or disorders may help a family practice determine risk factors for the individual, other members of the family and even future generations. They'll use this paperwork to look for patterns and see if anyone is at risk when it comes to developing particular conditions.
What Disorders Are Checked For?
When examining the family medical history, people with a larger than normal risk of having common disorders will be analyzed. These include disorders such as:
• Heart disease
• High blood pressure
• Stroke
• Cancer
• Diabetes
Lifestyle choices, genetic factors and environmental conditions all play a role in determining what risks are at large. While it may never happen, it's good to know in order for a family practice doctor to be aware and look out for signs. Conditions such as sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis through rare, can be caused by the mutation of only a single gene.
Reducing Risk
As stated before, having access to family medical history a family practice can help one take steps to reduce his or her risk. There is no guaranteed that anyone will for sure develop the condition of concern.
When it comes to those people who are at an increased risk to develop certain types of cancers, members of a family practice may suggest more frequent screenings. These include such things as colonoscopy or mammography, and more often. In fact, they may suggest the individual get these screenings at an earlier age than one is recommended.
Also, lifestyle changes including getting started on a healthier diet, quitting smoking or other bad habits, and participating in regular exercise will lower chances of getting common illnesses like heart disease or diabetes.
Talk to Relatives
This is the easiest way to collect the necessary information about family medical history. Ask if they've had any medical problems, or issues with their health. Find out about when they occurred and what the overall diagnosis was. Having all the family together when this is discussed will make it easier, and filling out that dreaded paperwork will be a cinch.
Another option is to take it with when leaving the family practice. It can always be returned later when it is thoroughly filled out. Medical records as well as other documents like death certificates or obituaries are great for adding to the history records. Keep all the info up-to-date, that way of it's necessary to choose a different family practice or see a specialist it's readily available so one is ready to receive the best health care possible at all times.

Today Is a Rest Day!

It's important to realize how vital rest between workouts are. They give the body a chance to rebuild and repair itself after an intense workout. Lifting weights and/or doing body weight exercises causes micro tears in your muscles. Resting allows the body to repair these muscles and because of the stress put on these muscles your body automatically rebuilds them a little stronger and bigger than before. Isn't the body a wonderful thing?
BUT, a rest day doesn't mean you lie on the couch all day drinking soda and eating potatoes chips! You need to do three things. These three things will speed your recovery and prepare you for your next workout session.
1. Flood your body with nutrients from real foo;. juice and or smoothies, lots of veggies, fruit, lean protein and water. Your body desperately needs these to repair & rebuild. You should make a point to drink plenty of fluids as your body needs to hydrate itself after an intense workout. I also like to add a scoop of whey protein powder to my smoothies giving my muscles a boost.
2. Do some physical activity! The one I like the best is walking. But you can also do gentle stretching, Yoga, Qigong, Tai Chi and/or swimming. This is not a time to push for your personal best like walking an extra mile. Take it easy!
3. Get plenty of sleep! We all know that sleep is the body's way of giving our minds and bodies a chance to repair and heal. Don't short change your fitness program by cheating yourself out of a good night's sleep. If possible take a short "power nap" during the day. Your body will thank you for it!
Optional: This is also a great time to practice meditation, listen to soothing music or pursue a hobby like painting or drawing. Start a journal, it is a great way to unwind and organize your thoughts.
Keeping fit and following a well- planned fitness regime takes dedication. Allowing your body to rest keeps a balance between the physical demands a strenuous workout program places on your muscles and needed rest periods.
As I get older I am more aware of the importance of rest. I find that I need two and even three days between strenuous workouts. Listen to your body! The old saying about no pain no gain is outdated and an invitation for injury which would sideline your fitness program. So enjoy your day of rest. Follow these suggestions and you're be ready to hit the gym refreshed and invigorated tomorrow.

Is Paranoia Total Awareness When It Comes to Health?

I have yet to meet many adults who weren't interested in staying healthy, but each of us being unique find are own paths. Perhaps it begins with our parents telling us to do certain things like eat a good breakfast, or bouts of illness we experiences during our lifetimes. I believe that keeping healthy is amazing when it comes to quality of life, not always in terms of longevity. As far as I know there are two things we can't choose, when we are born, and when we die. I also think many unhealthy choices are out of our control, the air we breathe, the chemicals in the food we ingest, our genes, and the viruses we acquire unknowingly from others. It would seem that what is considered good for us today, might be frowned upon in the future. Therefore becoming paranoid about a person's health could be an exercise in futility. Here is what I mean in these terms.
As I mentioned above quality of life is very important for our well-being. My Mother used to say to me hard work never killed anyone stress does. Constantly worrying about health can be very stressful, so my perspective is doing what makes you happy in moderation is a much better quality of life. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol, my father had it, and the doctor put me on Lipitor, saying I should watch my diet. One of my favorite breakfasts were eggs and toast, but for year's eggs were taboo for those with cholesterol. I denied myself that pleasure for several years, only to find out new studies saying an egg a day is alright. Also one of the side effects of using that medication is liver damage, better to take it than not, but there are risks come from all angles including the medical cures.
Veering back to longevity for a second. I had a childhood friend who didn't smoke, do drugs, ate well and died at twenty-seven years old. He walked into gas stations to visit his buddy, it was robbed and he was shot dead an innocent by standard. Another childhood friend just died last year at 54, wasn't a drinker or smoker but passed from leukemia. How about all those children and adults murdered senselessly in the concentration camps, what quality of life did they live prior to becoming prisoners of war? One of my grandfathers died in 1970 of colon cancer, if he had lived in these times would have survived.
I personally respect the medical community, all the advancements have saved so many people's lives, which is a miraculous thing to do. The problem is they can't save everyone, simply because for whatever reason let it be God's will or family genes, when our number is up it is up. Spending our lives being paranoid about what could happen, I don't believe is a healthy way to exist. My suggestion is do what you feel is best, but in doing so don't deny being happy for a possibility of living a hundred years! Live long and prosper!

Here's Why You Should Look at Health and Fitness As a Lifestyle Change

Wondering why fitness is really a lifestyle change? Well let's take a look at a recent exercise study that was conducted. The study concluded that exercise can assist people who would traditionally fail at quitting their smoking habit, find a way to eventually quit smoking. Yes, that is correct, exercise can be used as a vehicle to help an individual stop smoking. And here is the reason behind it.
As we all know the ills of life can get us down which often leads to some form of emotional distress. And sometimes a person needs a way to help cope with this emotional distress. This is where exercise comes in, if you were to talk with the majority of people who exercise on a frequent basis, they would tell you how they are able to combat emotional stress by using fitness as a coping strategy.
Fitness helps the body to release endorphin's which kind of give the body an emotional high like in the example of "runner's high". If you are a runner or even an avid walker you can understand how much better you feel after you have completed your run or walk. It is these endorphin chemicals that are thought to be the key to managing stress. However, you should always seek medical advice before self treating any emotional distress ailments.
Another reason why fitness should be considered as a lifestyle, is because it simply make you look better and have more energy. Fat weighs you down, and no pun intended here, but it does. So the more you exercise, the more endurance you will gain and the better you will look as you start to slim down.
It helps with sleeping. Yes, exercising can help you sleep well at night. Especially if you lift weights. I regularly lift weights 2 to 3 times a week. I can't tell you how much easier it is for me to fall asleep at night. And for us ladies, I can tell you that lifting weights does not make you bulk up like a man. It will however, tone and accentuate our curves, helping us to look good in our little black dresses.
The bottom line is that fitness is good for our bodies overall. No matter what stage of life you are currently in. Young, elderly, single, married, in between jobs, or new divorced. Fitness can help you to navigate through the ups and downs of life.
